As my players near level 20, the story begins to reach its climax. Will the party bring about the ultimate calamity, or will the forces that oppose them triumph and save the known world?

Hey, TAY! It’s been a while since I’ve done one of these, but I felt compelled to share.

First, I’d like to say that, yes, this is an evil campaign. I know that sentence just elicited some groans and sighs from many DMs and players. I totally understand this. But I have the good fortune of having such an excellent group that they can do an fully evil campaign without it devolving into the backstabbing, murderhobo, Chaotic-Stupid-Instead-Of-Chaotic-Evil kind of game so many evil games and characters in groups usually create. With that said, onto the game itself.

The Party: Rhogar, Dragonborn monk and worshiper of Tiamat, goddess of evil dragons. Trundle, Drow elf cleric of Torag, god of the Underdark. Phale, human barbarian and ruthless mercenary. Gilbo Gibbins, goblin ranger of the Underdark.

Background: Millennia ago, The God of Death, Nerull, was deposed by his apprentice, who took over as the new God of Death and became known simply as The Raven Queen. Around the same time, the goddess Tiamat was defeated and her soul trapped and bound in the Abyss. With the deposing of two evil gods and the rise of one who is mostly neutral, the forces of good took control of most of the universe, and something resembling peace reigned over the universe. Earth, the material plane, or whatever name you would call it warred as usual, but these were the wars of mortals and were between kingdoms and armies, not the immense universe-shaking conflicts of the gods.

The Story So Far: The party spent the early levels doing what most parties do, finding odd jobs and doing what they can to keep coin in their pockets. Eventually, they began to butt heads with the church of Pelor ( in my game, this is pretty much the closest religion in resemblance to something like Christianity). This went on for quite a while, with it coming to a head when the PCs lead an invasion force and conquered the city of Highwind, the seat of the Pelorian church’s power in the region.

This act drew the attention of their gods, who saw in them the first real sign of the possibility to wrench power from the other gods’ grip. Through a series of dreams, visions, and go-betweens, the party was led to an area on the Plane of Infinite Mazes which held a closely-guarded secret, the locked up remnant of Nerull. The PCs battled through the Raven Queen’s forces, traps and puzzles, and ultimately freed the former God of Death from his prison.

But their work was not done. To completely reclaim his power, Nerull needed entry into the Shadowfell, or Plane of Shadows. The Raven Queen had seen to it that Nerull himself was unable to access the plane. This did not deter Torag and Tiamat though, who sent their new champions into the Shadowfell through a secret Gate. The party is there now, approaching the the tower that houses the power that blocks Nerull from entering the plane. Their plan is to invade and seize the tower, and end the blockade. Nerull will then enter and do battle with his old apprentice, while the PCs do what they can to help bring about her end.

If successful, my plan is to have the Raven Queen herself arrive and begin battling Nerull, while the party enters her body somehow( which will serve as their final dungeon delve), culminating in a battle against their own shadows and the Raven Queen’s heart. If the PCs win, Nerull will reclaim his throne and title of God of Death, and together he and Torag shall free Timat from her Abyssal prison. Earth itself will feel the effects as an armada of undead and evil dragons shall cause the entire surface to collapse in massive earthquakes, making all of the known world at once part of Torag’s Underdark domain. The PCs will become as unto gods themselves, avatars of their deities’ wrath and power. Game over.

Then we will just start a new game at level 1, this time a group of good aligned people, now living in the world their old party has wrought.
